THE PROTEUS

From the 1966 sci-fi classic ‘fantastic voyage’. Directed by Richard Fleischer and Produced by Saul David.

AURORA did many kits of sci-fi ships - The SEAVIEW and FLYING SUB from ‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’. The flying saucer from ‘The Invaders’, the ‘SPINDRIFT’ from ‘Land of the Giants’ and more. They even did ‘The VOYAGER’ from the cartoon series of ‘fantastic voyage’. ..but not the Proteus from the film!

This artwork imagines what a kit-box might have looked like. I intentionally avoided any ‘red’ as this may have been deemed too bloody and Aurora were often getting negative parental feedback on their kits and box art as too violent or gory. In the movie itself, the body interiors are not red. (The photographs of the interiors are of the 1/32nd scale Moebius kit released in 2017).

This artwork was updated in July 2025, increasing the saturation to better represent the vibrant colours seen in the film and to improve the perspective and overall look of the ship. it is a very complex shape and as it all white, with little in the way of surface details to describe that shape it is quite a challenge.

The Proteus was designed by HARPER GOFF

A full size physical box is available for sale.
