SUPERCAR - from the TV series created by Gerry Anderson (1961)

Supercar is Gerry Anderson’s 3rd TV series and the first Sci-Fi adventure programme and the first to be ‘filmed in Supermarionation’!

The series is made for kids, but enjoyable enough for parents too. Supercar is a fun show with a flexible premise; something happens and Mike Mercury jumps into Supercar, takes off and with scientific guidance and support from Prof. Popkiss and Dr. Beaker. Young Jimmy and the monkey Mitch are part of the small team. I was too young to see Supercar when it aired in 1961, and I don’t recall it being repeated – probably because it is in B&W. But thanks to DVD and blu-ray I have now seen all of the episodes. The show has a sort of comforting family dynamic that makes the adventures personal and special.

Supercar itself is the star of the show. It is capable of vertical take off and landing and is capable of supersonic, and even hypersonic, flight and underwater travel. Prof Popkiss and Dr Beaker are always tinkering with the ship, and in one episode it even flies to into the Earth’s orbit.

Supercar was built as a complete full-size prop – for the puppets - and a miniature for the more extreme flying scenes.

21feet in length so a 1/32nd scale kit would be a nice 8” approx. in length. The canopy would be able to move and the wings could retract. A figure of pilot Mike Mercury would be included. Probably molded in white plastic.
