UFO - from the 1970 TV Series ‘UFO’ created by Gerry Anderson
The Unidentified Flying Object from the classic 1970s TV show. Characters in the show would typically refer to these spacecraft as You-Foes, not U.F.O.s Only the computer controlled SID would use that convention when announcing incoming U.F.O.s.
The UFOs look great. simple yet sophisticated. They are not the silver discs or ‘hub cap’ shaped flying saucers we have come to expect from TV and Films and real life accounts and UFO sightings. These are shiny glass domes, with a glistening ring of tear-drop shaped petals that rotates at very high speed. They were accompanied onscreen by a pulsating sound effect - courtesy of long time Anderson collaborator, composer - and musical genius - Barry Gray. This would often play to scenes of empty space or an open sky. Eerie.
In 1/72nd this would be only about 3.5 inches in diameter. It is fun to think that a kit would include one of the tiny flick-start electric motors that came with the original 1/24th scale Super Kits and this would allow the ring of petals to spin!
A huge single piece of clear plastic would be required.. and the internal structure would be silver styrene. in 1/72nd the ship would be approx 3.5 inches in diameter.
