ROY CROSS - Celebration
Roy Cross is a celebrated marine artist who was responsible for most of the fantastic AIRFIX model kit box art. His work has inspired model-makers since the 1960s, with the exciting artwork, making the kits a ‘must have’.
This painting is an imagined scene of Mr Cross working on artwork for an Airfix box top, using a ‘test-shot’ model of the Avro Lancaster for reference. The timeline of some artwork being completed and on a pacakaged model - eg the Saturn V is not accurates, but was intentional to indicate eth scope of the work, and moreover to express the timeless nature of his work.
I grew up making Airfix model kits all featuring the superb Roy Cross artwork. And these are a huge inspiration for my ‘What If kit box gallery’.
There are several books of Roy Cross’s artwork. And two featuring his work for Airfix.
‘Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art’ and ‘More Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art’, both by Roy Cross.
