MONOTRAIN from ‘Thunderbirds’ (1965) created by Gerry Anderson
This impressive Mono-Rail system and Mono-Trains featured in two episodes of 'Thunderbirds' Monorail: 'Perils of Penelope' and 'Brink of Disaster'. As with many of the vehicles and technology in the series it is a fantastic machine despite its somewhat impractical design, it is realised on screen in such a way that it is totally believable. The shots of the trains travelling through open countryside, with the excellent ‘roaring’ sound effects from John and Jan Taylor and the Barry Gray score are a thrill and a joy to behold,
I tried to convey that feeling in this painting. This was originally created this artwork for the ‘Hornby What If Box’. It has been extended to include the whole train for this painting. The Mono-Train from ‘Thunderbirds’ is one of my favourite Anderson vehicles.
It is interesting to compare it with the more practical, and far less exciting, Mono-train seen in ‘Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons’.
