RAT and CARRIER from the Hunger Games; Mockingjay Flight Ride (2019)

‘Mockingjay Flight’ is a simulator Rides based on the successful Hunger Games films starring Jennifer Lawrence. The audience become involved in the adventure and climb aboard a RAT, a rugged armoured vehicle, which docks with an aircraft where it is airlifted to a new location. None of the main characters from the film(s) are featured.

I did the original design sketches for the two machines, based on direction from Framestore’s Creative Director JASON FOX and referencing the hardware that appears in the film(s). The ride involved a point-of-view Ride film - in the same vein as the groundgreaking Disneyland/Lucasfilm ‘Star Tours’ Ride attraction from 1987, where a flight simulator is outfitted with rows of passenger seats and a ‘movie’ is projected into the ‘window’ at the front of the vehicle. The two vehicles had to match the physical Rat (flight simulator) as well as story points seen elsewhere in the attraction.
