HELL DRIVERS - DODGE 100 KEW ‘Parrot Nosed’ Truck

Hell Drivers produced by Benjamin Fizs & Earl St. John, Directed by Cy Endfield

Hell Drivers is a British film from the 1950s that is a tough action thriller set in a hauling company where drivers are paid based on how much they haul in a day. The hauling company in the film uses Dodge 100 KEW ‘parrot nosed’ Trucks. Stanley Baker (who would have an interesting James Bond by the way) stars with a rich ensemble cast. Each truck is numbered and assigned a drive. Baker is given No. 13!

The film is down to earth and gripping and was filmed largely filmed on location and has that raw quality that many British films of the era have. It looks like it was shot in the winter and the countryside is stark. I tried to cap (ture this in this painting.

There’s some great stunt driving and exciting ‘chases’ as each driver trie to complete the most haulage runs in a day The film is made in black and white, but the trucks were evidently green, with black trim and were loaned from WW Drinkwater of Willesden, London. They were geiven ‘Hewletts markings’ but I beelive were not repainted for the film.

As a model kit these would be moulded in the sort of army green used for many of the tanks and armoured vehicles.
